A sensual duet about the once controversial and forbidden, Sundanese music and dance: Jaipongan, at the time of its conception: Indonesia's answer to Western Rock and Roll.

This choreography is part of an interdisciplinary performance for multiple dancers created on sensual, polyrythmical Jaipongan music. It succesfully premiered in the Netherlands in 1998 and has been performed in several versions since.
Gerard Mosterd was born in the Netherlands but from Dutch-Indonesian ancestry. His mother was born in Sumatra. Gerard is a veteran choreographer, exploring his Dutch-Indonesian roots in dance performances. As a graduate from the dance department of the Royal Conservatory in The Hague in the Netherlands, he has followed an international career as a dancer, performing worldwide works by prominent choreographers and with renowned companies.
Among the choreographers are Maurice Bejart, Christopher Bruce, Jiri Kylian, Mats Ek, Rudolf Nureyev, Sir Kenneth MacMillan, Natalia Makarova and Lindsay Kemp. Some of the companies he performed with are London Festival Ballet, English National Ballet, Royal Ballet of Flanders, Concordanse Paris and Hwa Kang Dance Company Taipei. Subsequently he focused in the mid-nineties to creating independent dance performances which annually toured the Netherlands and South-East Asia.
Gerard is known in the South East Asian performing arts scene because of numerable, notable dance performances and collaborations. He collaborated with prominent Indonesian artists such as Farida Oetoyo, Boy Sakti, Martinus Miroto, Benny Krisnawardi, Eko Supriyanto, Sri Qadariatin, Jamaluddin Latief, Rudy Wowor, Siko Setiyanto, Rury Avianti and Hendro Yuliyanto.
Gerard worked with Gumarang Sakti, Miroto Dance Company, Teater Garasi, Sumber Cipta, Namarina Dance Company among others and ran workshop and masterclass programs with IKJ, UDW, EKI, ISI and STSI in Java, Bali and Sumatra as well as with NAFA, Lasalle in Singapore, ASWARA and Sutra in Kuala Lumpur and Patravadi in Bangkok.
Gerard created performances and taught for many ballet groups in Jakarta and Surabaya. He organized a Russian ballet gala in Manila with Ballet Manila and stars from Mariinsky and Bolshoi. Gerard instigated an exchange program (Ballet Under The Stars) between Singapore Dance Theatre and Ballet Manila.
Since 2011 Gerard created A Javanese L’Histoire du Soldat in Indonesia with music by Stravinsky and popular Javanese dancers. This work was performed years in a row in Javanese venues and festivals. In its last version it was performed with text by Goenawan Mohamad, touring Indonesia and the Netherlands.
Gerard performed as an antagonist actor and dancer in Garin Nugroho’s 2014 all star feature film Tjokroaminoto, Guru Bangsa. Gerard’s work has been frequently and succesfully performed in all notable Indonesian performing arts festivals and venues, including the Indonesian Dance Festival in Jakarta.
Gerard Mosterd is annually active in the Indonesian performing arts since 20 years now. He loves Indonesia and feels very much at home here. Gerard works as a curator for festivals such as Indomania and runs an impresario company (kantor pos-MTSM) touring dance-, opera- and ballet productions in international exchange.
